Your First Show Checklist

Competing in your first horse show can feel overwhelming. There's so much to remember! This checklist will help you stay organized and confident on show day.

4–6 Weeks Before the Show

• [ ] Register for the show (entry forms, fees)
• [ ] Confirm your horse has a current Coggins test (required at most shows)
• [ ] Check vaccination records are up to date
• [ ] Confirm your test, pattern, or course with your instructor
• [ ] Begin practicing your test/course in lessons

1–2 Weeks Before

• [ ] Confirm your show schedule and class times
• [ ] Prepare your show attire (clean, pressed, appropriate for discipline)
• [ ] Clean and condition your tack
• [ ] Purchase any missing equipment (show number, gloves, etc.)
• [ ] Arrange transportation for your horse if needed

The Day Before

• [ ] Give your horse a bath
• [ ] Pull or braid mane if required by discipline
• [ ] Polish boots and clean helmet
• [ ] Pack your show kit (see below)
• [ ] Get a good night's sleep!

Show Day Kit

For your horse: - Grooming kit (brushes, hoof pick, hoof polish) - Hay and grain for the day - Water buckets - Fly spray - First aid supplies

For you: - Show attire (complete outfit) - Helmet - Gloves - Water and snacks - Phone (charged) - Positive attitude!

At the Show

• Arrive at least 2 hours before your first class
• Walk your horse around the grounds to let them settle
• Warm up properly before your class
• Know where the ring is and how to get there
• Breathe, smile, and enjoy the experience

Remember: your first show is about learning, not winning. Every competitor you see has been exactly where you are now.
